Music Center Debrecen

Year: 2024

Size: 3085m2

Type: cultural

Role: architectural design, interior design, competition entry

The task of this architectural competition was quite complex: take three vastly different buildings from different eras, combine them with an extension and create a new cultural center for music.

We wanted to strike a balance between preserving and restoring the heritage values, while creating a cutting edge, flexible and cool venue. The site is situated in the historic city center, surrounded by mixed-density urban fabric with a dominant historical character. Our plan emphasizes preserving and strengthening the area's historical identity while integrating newer elements harmoniously. The development seeks to respect the established urban boundaries and maintain a balance between contemporary and traditional design.

The central space is a multifunctional, well-lit forum that connects internal and external areas. Materials such as fine plaster, structured coatings, clinker brick, and bronze-toned surfaces reflect durability and elegance while resonating with the building’s historical and modern elements. The interior prioritizes acoustics and aesthetics, ensuring functional and inviting spaces.

Acoustic considerations are paramount, with advanced solutions to minimize noise transfer and optimize internal sound quality. A "house within a house" approach is used in the main auditorium, featuring specialized wall and floor systems to support the high acoustic demands of musical performances.

The design reflects a balance of preservation, innovation, and functionality, aiming to create a landmark that integrates into Debrecen's historic cityscape while catering to modern cultural needs.
